BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL NOTE:
Born in 1848 in Marshall, Missouri, Colonel Lewis Steenrod McLure served in the 1st Missouri Brigade of the Confederate army during the Civil War. He engaged in silver mining in Montana from 1869 to 1975 and then moved to Seattle where he became an insurance agent. He married Ella Tibbits in 1880 and moved to San Diego in 1882. He built a house on the corner of 24th and Market streets and lived there with his wife and her sister Fannie M. Tibbits until his death in 1932.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The McLure Family Collection was originally with the San Diego Public Library. It contains glass negatives and card photographs of the McLure and Tibbits family. Subjects include portraits of Colonel L.S. McLure, his wife Ella, her sister Fannie M. Tibbits, friends of the family, interior and exterior views of the McLure house, and views from a windmill in back of the house. There are also images of Sweetwater Dam and a trip to Cedros Island, Baja California.
