Additionally, the negatives were divided in two groups: A/SK1-183 and B/SK92-281.

GENERAL NOTES:
Arrangement: (1-5) group A/SK1-183 negatives, (6-10) group B/SK92-281 negatives, (11-12) proofs for groups A and B, (13) photographic prints for groups A and B, and (14-15) oval photographs mounted on mirror-backed metal badges. This collection forms part of San Diego History Center Negative Collection. A series of 18 photograph reference books containing 3,554 contact prints are provided for reference use. Also, 658 copy negatives are available, 94:19136/0-638 and 94:19123/0-18. Textual information from the collection does not indicate which photographs were taken by Roland Schneider and which ones were taken by Florence Kemmler. Related materials include the Roland Schneider Autochrome Collection (C107) and the Schneider-Westhaver Family Collection (C108) in the Photograph Archives, and an unprocessed collection of Schneider family papers in the Research Archives. Some photographs in the collection were published in Memories, San Diego 1920-1932: A Nostalgic Look at the People of San Diego through the Photographs of Roland and Florence Schneider selected, with an introduction, by Tom Jacobsen (San Diego, Calif.: Little Desert Graphics, 1976).

BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL NOTE:
Ernest Roland Schneider was born in San Diego in 1884. His family moved to Switzerland in 1887. He graduated from the University of Zurich with a doctor of laws degree before returning with his mother to San Diego in 1919 where they owned and operated the Hotel Schneider on 8th Street. Florence B. Kemmler was born in 1900 and her family moved to San Diego in 1920 where she met Roland Schneider. Together they went on to become award winning amateur photographers with exhibits in galleries around the world. In 1934, they married and had a son, Roland Ernest Schneider. That same year Ernest Roland Schneider died and Florence Kemmler Schneider stopped taking photographs. She died in 1972.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
These photographs by Roland Schneider and Florence Kemmler document people, places, events, and daily life in the San Diego area during the 1920s and early 1930s. People include: men, women, children, teenagers, and aged persons; twins; public figures; audiences, spectators, and crowds; ethnic groups, including Native Americans, African Americans, and Mexicans; people associated with the military, transportation, business, and entertainment; people engaged in work and various recreational activities, including swimming, water skiing, and sailing; also, images of Roland Schneider and Florence Kemmler dressed in various costumes, at the beach, playing miniature golf, taking pictures, and posing with family members. Places include: downtown San Diego, San Diego Bay, and the waterfront; beaches, bathhouses, and piers at Coronado, Mission Beach, and Ocean Beach; La Jolla’s beaches, caves, and cliffs; Agua Caliente resort and Tijuana; the back country; national parks and other locations in California and Arizona. Events include: Showley Brothers Candy Factory fire; parades, including the Rose Parade in Pasadena; bathing beauty contests; the 1923 solar eclipse; a “human fly” climbing the U.S. Grant Hotel; the Junipero Serra Museum and Presidio Park dedication; and Charles Lindbergh’s return to San Diego after his historic flight.
