Hamlin Garland's Observations on the American Indian:
1895-1905. Edited by Lonnie E. Underhill and Daniel F. Littlefield, Jr.
Tucson, The University of Arizona Press, 1976. 214 pages. $4.95 paper. $9.95 cloth.
This collection of thirteen essays provides first-hand
accounts of the life of American Indians during a difficult period when the life
style of reservation Indians underwent significant change as a result of
relentless pressure from the dominant Anglo culture. Most of Garland's essays,
which are based primarily on his field notes, have not been published
previously. The collection includes observations on many of the Indians of the
Southwest, but not of California.
