A downtown street scene in 1943 dramatizes the fact that wartime San Diego
was a great military base. Crowded with throngs of people, both military and
civilian, streets were full of marine khaki, and navy blue with white caps along
with defense plant workers on busy round the clock schedules. In a still
comparatively small town, San Diego's commercial and entertainment activity
remained centered in the downtown area. Wartime San Diego is further explored in
a pictorial essay beginning on page 197.
