Richard H. Peterson, Book Review Editor
The Eagle and the Serpent, The Invasions of Mexico: 1519 and
1846. By John Selby. New York: Hippocrene Books, Inc., 1978. Illustrations,
maps, appendices, bibliography, index. 163 pages. $12.95.
Essentially a popular political and military history of the
Spanish con-quest of the Aztec Empire and of the much later war between Mexico
and the United States, the work is an undocumented narrative which fails to
integrate the Spanish and American invasions of Mexico or to raise serious
questions of historical analysis. The factual information available here can be
found in other more reliable sources.
