California Mission Poetry: A Select Compilation. Edited by Msgr. Francis J. Weber. Illustrated by Bernhardt Wall. Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1978. 240 pages. $12.00.

The editor has compiled a number of verses about California's missions from such writers as Bret Harte, William Hooper Howells, and Minnie M. Tingle. Although interesting and entertaining as poetry, the book contains no historical or editorial commentary on the various poets or their subjects. One is left to guess what criteria were used in selecting the mission poems.
