Page 4. Anna Held, the governess employed by U.S. Grant Jr., and three of his older
children: Miriam, Julia and Chaffee. Over the years Anna developed the Green
Dragon Colony in La Jolla.
Page 5. The Havermale Mansion at the corner of Eighth and Ash Streets
became the new home of the Grant family. It was purchased for only
a fourth of what Samuel Havermale had paid for it.

Page 8-9. The U.S. Grant Hotel and Horton Plaza about 1912. The hotel officially opened
on October 10, 1910. It contained 437 rooms, 350 of which had private baths.
Other features included a roof garden, palm court, bivouac grill, dining room
and magnificent ballroom. Designed by Harrison Allbright, the building received
world-wide recognition.
