Book Review
Raymond Starr, Book Review Editor

Inside La Jolla, 1887-1987.

By the La Jolla Historical Society. San Diego: La Jolla Historical Society, 1986. Illustrations. 266 Pages. Paperbound. Price unavailable.

Like so many other neighborhoods and communities in the San Diego area, La Jolla came into being during the boom years of the 1880s. Thus, it celebrated its centennial in 1987. To mark that occasion, the La Jolla Historical Society published Inside La Jolla. The book contains a chronology of the community's major events, essays on La Jolla prior to 1950, and an essay on some of the prominent women in La Jolla's past and present. Less a history of La Jolla than a compilation of information which will provide the foundations for future formal histories, Inside La Jolla nonetheless captures much of the flavor and color of this part of San Diego. Thus as a source of material for the serious scholar, and a good capturing of the atmosphere of La Jolla for members of that community, this book is a worthy addition to a local library.
