Book Review
Raymond Starr, Book Review Editor

National Parks: The American Experience.

By Alfred Runte. Second Edition, Lincoln: The University of Nebraska Press, 1987. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. 335 Pages. $23.95.

Since the first edition was published in 1979, Alfred Runte's National Parks: The American Experience, has been the standard one volume overview of the history of our national park system. For this revised edition, material has been added on the Alaska lands, James Watt, the evolution of the Park Service biological management programs, plus some defense of criticisms of the first edition. The coverage is obviously brief and general; for instance there is no reference at all to the Cabrillo National Monument, San Diego's only outpost of the National Park Service.
