Kate Sessions - Pioneer Horticulturist
A scholarly and in-depth biography of one of America's great horticulturists. If Alonzo Horton was called the "Father of San Diego", Kate Sessions was the Mother of Balboa Park. Kate Sessions turned the barren mesas of San Diego into the lush fields of trees, bushes and flowers of today. In order to keep her nursery at the north end of Balboa Park, which was public land, Kate promised to plant 100 trees in Balboa Park and 300 trees throughout San Diego as "rent" for each year she remained at that site. She was the pioneer who imported seeds and cuttings from all over the world and grew them successfully in their new environment. Gives enlightening insights into the life of San Diego in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century.
