Diary of Pedro Fages (Page 57)

Diary of the journey made by land to the Colorado River by order of Don Theodoro de Croix, caballero de Croix, field-marshal of the royal armies, and commandant-general of the Provincias Internas, etc., by the troops of His Majesty detailed for the purpose under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Don Pedro Fages, captain of one of the free companies of volunteers of Catalonia, and his second in command, Don Pedro Tueros, captain of cavalry, commandant of the Royal Presidio, of Altar.

Sunday, September 16, 1781 – After mass we set out from the presidio of Pitic, and, after travelling three leagues, stopped at Lomas Blancas, on account of the storm of rain and hail that came up in the afternoon, obliging us to sleep in that place.
From Pitic to Lomas Blancas, 3 leagues. Distance from Pitic, 3 leagues.

Monday, September 17. -We broke camp in the Morning at this place, and arrived at the Hacienda del Torreón, where we slept.
To Torreón, 9 leagues. Distance from Pitic, 12 leagues.

The following is a translation of the first page of Jayme’s letter to Serra in connection with the moving of the mission (Page 25)

“Praised be Jesus, Mary and Joseph Rev. Fr. President Junipero Serra “May the grace of the Holy Spirit be with Your Reverence and with me. Amen.

“On the 2nd of this month, letter arrived from Monterey in which we are advised of the happy arrival of El Principe; things appear to have adjusted themselves well. The Indians here, as more come, become humbler and the gentiles show greater desire to be baptized. In days passed all the boys from the comer rancheria came to learn the doctrine and be baptized, but since we were unable to give them azote each time they came because of the scarcity we have of com (and if the boat delays in arriving, there will hardly be any left for the Indians of California) they stopped coming. If we are able to harvest some of the wheat we planted, then we may be able to baptize them. We planted here about five fanegas of wheat, it sprouted and kept in good shape until the month of January, but later because of the lack of water, most of it dried up; it rained in March on two occasions, and it seemed to have recovered, and now it appears…”
