According to additional information provided on 1/2012 by a member of the E.H. Davis Project Scholar Advisory Committee: The acorn storage was designed to hold the acorns, which would be gathered in the fall, and allow them to dry throughout the winter season. It was common practice to wait until the acorns were dried to a point where they cracked open by themselves. The delayed processing time allowed for easier grinding and more flavorful consumption.
