BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL NOTE:
Born in Spain in 1882, Jose J. Aguirre emigrated to San Diego in 1905 where he worked as a meat cutter for Hardy’s Market (later Young’s Market). He married Petra Ardaiz, also a native of Spain, and had a son James. He died in 1968.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The collection contains mostly studio portraits of Jose Aguirre, his wife, son, and other family members. Many of the photographs are mounted in card frames or textured-paper folders. It includes the work of early San Diego photographers Louis F. Steinbach, George J. Vreeland, Melvin H. Sykes, Alice Whitney Smith, Alfred C. Platt, Fred Hartsook, and others; and family portraits by F. Mena of Elizondo, in the Basque region of Spain. The images depict infants, young girls and boys dressed for first communion, wedding couples, and family groups. Most lack identification. There are also two oversize hand-colored photographic prints of Jose Aguirre, his wife, and son.
