Established by Mathias F. Heller in 1892, Heller’s became the first major grocery store chain in the San Diego area. Heller sold his 42 stores to the MacMarr chain in 1929, later absorbed by Safeway.
SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTES:
Documents San Diego area grocery store chain. Consists mostly of 1927 photographs by Elwyn M. Heller of branch stores at 5th, 9th, E, Beech, Imperial, 1st, Logan, Union, 25th, W. Washington, Juniper, Upas, University, Park, and other locations. Other photographs from the 1890s show interior and exterior views of early Heller’s stores, including the first at 11th and F. Also contains a portrait of founder Mathias F. Heller.
