BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL NOTE:
A pioneer distributor of building materials in southern California, the Whiting-Mead Company was established in Los Angeles in 1898 by Perry Whiting and W.H. Mead. The company opened its first San Diego store in 1912 under the direction of E.A. Kavanagh. In 1916 Harvey L. Miner replaced him and headed Whiting-Mead’s San Diego branch until 1946 when it was sold to Builders’ Market.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
This collection documents activities of the Whiting-Mead Company’s San Diego branch. It includes exterior and interior views of stores, departments, warehouses, and lumberyards; model houses, exhibits, product displays, and company trucks; individual and group portraits of employees, including those serving in the military during World War II; banquets, picnics, and other events; branch manager Harvey L. Miner and company founder W.H. Mead; construction and demolition scenes, including Tent City in Coronado; and a fire damaged main store and office building on K Street.
