SD101 Californio Women of Old Town San Diego

TUESDAY, MARCH 8, 2022  |  12:00PM – 1:00PM  |  ON ZOOM

ABOUT THE EVENT
The Californios lived in the town of San Diego during the time it was part of Mexico (1821-1850). When you read about the history of the Californios, you rarely learn anything about the women of that time and place. The women of Californio families combined Native, Spanish, and American lifestyles to make this period of American history one of our most diverse and culturally significant, and the Californio women of San Diego are part of a hidden history.

If the written histories do not include a group of people, does that mean they had only a marginal or trivial role? Join Dr. Susan Hector in this fascinating exploration of under-presented history to uncover the essential contribution of women to the frontier colony, including establishment of gardens and orchards, family and community counseling, cooking, textile production (spinning, weaving, sewing), medical care for the family and community, religious instruction, and education.
