DESCRIPTION:\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					Introducing the Ah Quin Family: The First Chinese Family in San Diego’s Early Chinatown\nTUESDAY\, May 10\, 2022  |  12:00PM – 1:00PM   |  ON ZOOM \n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n					ABOUT THE EVENTAh Quin was the informal mayor of San Diego’s early Chinatown\, but he was also a prolific writer who left behind eleven volumes of a diary that spans from 1877 to 1902\, providing a personal account of many of the landmark experiences of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. In 1881 he married Ah Sue\, and they raised a family of twelve children in San Diego. This talk will introduce you to the Ah Quin family and what it was like for them to live in San Diego during the Age of Chinese Exclusion. We’ll also discuss his life as a bachelor laborer in San Francisco\, some of the secrets contained within his diary\, and his present-day legacy. \n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n					Speaker and bio: Susie Lan Cassel and Cyndie Quin-SooSusie Lan Cassel\, Professor\, Literature and Writing Studies Department and a Founding Faculty of the Ethnic Studies Program at California State University\, San Marcos\, is an award-winning teacher and scholar. She is editing The Ah Quin Diary (forthcoming\, Stanford University Press) and writing a historical biography about the Ah Quin Family.Cyndie Quin-Soo is a great-granddaughter of Ah Quin and Ah Sue. She was an Analyst for the Federal Government for 38 years before retiring.
