DESCRIPTION:\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					Right to Read: Understanding Banned Books\, LGBTQ+ Representation\, and Freedom of Expression\nJULY 11\, 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM \n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n					Join the Women’s Museum of California\, the San Diego History Center\, and Lambda Archives on July 11th for a thought-provoking panel discussion delving into the historical context of banned books and the rise in efforts to remove LGBTQ+ stories and history from library shelves. \nOur panelists\, comprised of scholars\, activists\, and librarians\, will highlight the impact of banned books on individuals and communities and discuss the value of maintaining open and equitable learning spaces and opportunities. \n$15 General Admission\n$10 WMC and SDHC members\n \nPanelists:\nAdrianne Peterson is the Branch Manager at the Rancho Peñasquitos Branch of San Diego Public Library. She is passionate about bringing together community members to share their knowledge and experiences with each other while learning\, making connections\, and having fun. She has presented at conferences and trainings on adult/all-ages programming\, person-in-charge training\, and change management. She received her BA in Art from San Diego State University and her Masters in Library and Information Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  \nMoni Barrette is a sixteen-year public librarian who expanded her expertise in libraries\, comics\, and relationship building through her role at LibraryPass as the Director of Content Management and Publisher Relations. As co-founder of the nonprofit Creators Assemble\, San Diego State University lecturer\, 2023 Eisner Awards judge\, and Past-President of the American Library Association’s Graphic Novel & Comics Round Table\, and board liaison to their Addressing Challenges Committee\, she is dedicated to promoting learning through the use of comics and popular culture.  \nDr. Lillian Faderman is a scholar of lesbian and LGBTQ history. Her books\, which have been translated into seven languages\, include SURPASSING THE LOVE OF MEN\, ODD GIRLS AND TWILIGHT LOVERS\, THE GAY REVOLUTION\, HARVEY MILK and WOMAN. Her work has been recognized by numerous awards\, and the NEW YORK TIMES named three of her books to its annual list of 100 Best Books of the Year. \nFor the past 8 years\, Francesca has worked as a public librarian in youth services. She champions intellectual freedom\, access\, equity\, and inclusivity. She is a social justice advocate\, who strives to uplift the BIPOC and queer/trans communities she serves and supports their “right to read” diverse books that reflect their intersectional lived experiences. Francesca was born and raised in San Jose\, CA. She possesses an MLIS degree and a Master’s degree in American History from San Jose State University. She is an avid owl lover\, and in her spare time\, she enjoys San Diego’s beautiful beaches and parks.\n \nModerator:\nNicole Verdes is devoted to serving arts and culture organizations as an administrator and advocate. In their time as Managing Director of Lambda Archives\, she has been successful in using her passion for social justice\, arts and culture\, and cultural preservation to create policies that center equity and access. In addition to her role at Lambda Archives\, they have served on the Executive Committee of the San Diego LGBT Community Centers’ Young Professionals Council\, Treasurer on the Steering Committee for Rising Arts Leaders San Diego\, as a member of Diversionary Theatre’s Community Advisory Committee\, and currently serves on the board of the San Diego Regional Arts and Culture Coalition. \n				\n			 \n				RSVP HERE\n			\n			 \n				\n				\n			 \n				\n				\n			 			\n			\n
