DESCRIPTION:\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n				\n					\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n					GROWING BALBOA PARK: COASTAL SCRUB TO GARDEN FAIR \n\nTuesday\, September 13\, 2022 \n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n					The earliest days of Balboa Park were filled with threats\, uncertainties and indignities. Efforts to plant and improve the park were halting until a formal landscape plan was secured in 1902. Existing features of our park reflect this plan\, though it was sidelined when preparations for a 1915 exposition in the park began. When the famous Olmsted Brothers landscape firm withdrew from the exposition\, work devolved to two “accidental landscapers.” The richly planted and perfectly maintained grounds of the Panama-California Exposition won extravagantly praise as a “Garden Fair.” This program introduces a wide case of characters and is illustrated with numerous vintage photographs and postcards showing how the exposition forever changed Balboa Park and influenced horticulture in all of Southern California. \n				\n			 \n				\n				\n				\n					Presenter: Nancy Carol Carter is a historian and frequent community speaker who researches the development of Balboa Park\, horticulture and landscape history\, and the life and work of Kate Sessions. She has published in California Garden\, Eden\, Journal of San Diego History\, Pacific Horticulture and VIEW (LALH). She is the Associate Editor of California Garden magazine and is a director of the San Diego Floral Association. Carter is a member of Forever Balboa Park’s Horticulture Committee and Park Improvement Committee. She holds M.S\, M.L.S. and J.D. degrees and is retired from the University of San Diego School of Law. \n				\n			 \n				RESERVATION\n			\n			 \n				\n				\n			 \n				\n				\n			 			\n			\n
