Alonzo E. Horton wrote this in a letter to a good friend in 1871 in which he praised the virtues of what is now downtown San Diego. Letters such as this one provide much insight into the man whose enthusiasm, optimism, and foresight earned him the title of “Father” Horton, the founder of modern San Diego.
