Mexico: A History.

By Robert Ryal Miller. Norman: University of Oklahoma Press. 1985. Illustrations. Maps. Graphs and Charts. Bibliography. Index. 414 Pages. $19.95.

The University of Oklahoma Press has come out with a new one volume college level textbook on the history of Mexico. It is by Robert Ryall Miller, retired Latin Americanist who has taught at a number of universities, the most recent being California State University, Hayward. The book is a narrative history of the political, social and cultural life of Mexico from earliest cultures to recent times. Miller has incorporated recent archaeological evidence and has tried to describe the lives of both urban workers and peasants. He has also provided background to contemporary topics such as the foreign debt, the role of petroleum, and the social needs of the expanding Mexican population. There is a lengthy-but not annotated-bibliography to provide guidance to additional reading.
