Newspapers in California.

By California State Library Foundation. Sacramento: California State Library Foundation. 1985. 176 Pages. $7.50 Paperbound.

Newspapers in California is an extremely important research too] published and distributed by the California State Library Foundation (P.O. Box 2037, Sacramento CA 95608). It is the result of early work on the California portion of the United States Newspaper Project and is based on the results of 1092 questionnaires. Anyone doing research on a California topic which involves use of newspapers should stop everything until they have examined this bibliographic tool in detail!

The book contains a general background on California newspapers, a bibliography to the history of individual newspapers, a survey of major newspaper collections in the state, and of various bibliographical systems. Newspapers in California also discusses microfilm projects, lists newspaper indexing and newspaper clipping projects. Especially useful to most researchers is the list of newspapers by county and by city. The guide is meant to be a preliminary report which can become the foundation for a full and complete union list and bibliography of California newspapers. A check of San Diego listings would indicate a high degree of accuracy and completeness for a preliminary work.
