The Southern Overland Routes: Cyclists’ Guide to a Major Scenic and Historic Route Through the Southwest.
By Lowell Lindsay and Diana Lindsay. San Diego: Sunbelt Productions. 1985. Maps. Illustrations. Index. 166 Pages. $7.95 Paperbound.
If you have the urge to bicycle from Austin to Los Angeles, San Diego authors Diana and Lowell Lindsay have published a comprehensive guide to show you how to do it. Diana Lindsay is well known locally for her history of the Borrego desert and Lowell Lindsay is an official with the YMCA.
They have previously collaborated on another guidebook, The Anza-Borrego Desert Region (1978). The new guide, Southern Overland Route, is a very thorough one. It describes the climate, water, road system, accommodations, and scenic and historic attractions of the route. The bulk of the guide gives a detailed account of the route with practical matters such as lists of bicycle repair shops, medical facilities, and detailed directions. The book is an excellent guide for the growing number of American bicyclists; it is also a useful guidebook for other kinds of travellers as well.
