Beyond This Place There be Dragons: The Routes of the Tragic Trek of the Death Valley 1849ers through Nevada, Death Valley, and on to Southern California.

By George Koenig. Glendale: The Arthur H. Clark Company, 1984. Maps. Charts. Illustrations. Bibliography. Index. 263 Pages. $29.50

In this, the fourteenth volume of the Arthur H. Clark Company’s “American Trail Series,” George Koenig tries to trace the exact routes of the various 1849ers who crossed Death Valley. He uses historical research and personal inspection of the terrain in order to determine the routes. The book is a masterful job of historical detective work, and will appeal to fans of the Fortyniners, of Death Valley history, and to afficionados of historical detective stories. The text is well supplemented by fold out maps and other visual aids.
