Edited by Edith R. Hornor. Palo Alto: Hornwood Press, 1988. 561 Pages. $59.95 Paperbound.

California Cities, Towns, & Counties, 1988 is the current edition of an annual publication which should be of interest to both historians and those working on contemporary affairs in California. The book is done as a reference volume, primarily for libraries, government agencies and business. The bulk of the book is devoted to listings of municipalities in California. Each entry includes socio-economic and demographic data (population, sex, race, educational, income and related information); information on housing starts, municipal finances, and material on the city’s officers and officials. There is also a listing for that community’s school district or districts. Most of the statistical information is based on the 1980 United States census. There are comparable listings with similar information for each county in California. For quick cross reference, there is a helpful list of municipalities by County. This is a handy quick-reference book which should be in every California library and government agency office.
