World War II had a profound impact on the industrial, political, and cultural development of the western United States. This volume, which is a reprint of the 1985 edition, details how the region, especially the coast, was changed by the war and began its rapid ascendancy as the dominant section of the nation. California is rightly emphasized in this study with much information of San Diego. The author did not focus on the economic impact of the war in this book, choosing instead to devote an entire volume (issued in June 1990) to that topic.
