The Conquest of the New World: American Holocaust.
By David E. Stannard. New York: Oxford University Press, 1992. Index. Notes. 358 pages. $13.95.

As the title indicates this is a study of how the native peoples of the new world were decimated by their contacts with the Europeans. Written with a fine eye for historical sources and documentation, this is no polemic but a well constructed argument that indeed there was a Holocaust with millions dying within a generation of contact. The author spares the reader no gruesome detail in this portrait of death, disease, and misery.
