The annual event that brings hundreds of thousands of visitors to San Diego from across the globe and—sometimes, it seems from across the galaxy—originated as a small, 300-person gathering of comic book fans in 1970.
In its 43 years of operation, the event has been able to grow rapidly by tying in to different art forms (web comics for example) as well as other mediums, like television and cinema specifically.
Today, Comic-Con International® provides significant economic stimulus to the City of San Diego through visitor spending and event fees and has helped to enhance the region’s visibility globally.
