KEEPERS OF THE CULTURE:
Honoring Our Cultural Icons

FEBRUARY 28, 5:00 PM – 7:30 PM

The San Diego African American Museum of Fine Art will host its annual Keepers of the Culture event—an evening dedicated to honoring legacy, leadership, and lived experience—in collaboration with the San Diego History Center. This signature program brings the community together to recognize individuals whose creativity, commitment, and cultural stewardship have shaped San Diego’s past and continue to influence its future.

Join us as we honor true cultural icons:

Jeannie Cheatham, Jazz Singer
Jeannie Cheatham broke barriers in the male-dominated world of jazz and blues, opening doors for women artists. With her late husband, she co-founded the Sweet Baby Blues Band, bringing authentic jazz and blues to audiences worldwide. Her legacy continues to inspire later generations, including vocalists like Cassandra Wilson and Samara Joy.

Sandra Foster King, Teacher & Dancer
For more than three decades, Sandra Foster King served as a UCSD Lecturer of Dance and educator at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts. Through dance and choreography, she introduced young people to Black dance as both an art form and a powerful means of cultural preservation.

Donald Robinson, Dance Educator & Mentor
Donald Robinson used his work as a dancer, choreographer, and educator at the School of Creative and Performing Arts to inspire hundreds of students. His teaching highlighted the contributions of Black artists to dance while fostering cultural awareness and mentorship that shaped lasting careers.

The Stance Family, Bowlegged BBQ
Owned by siblings Carlos, Kenny “Bowlegged,” and Maria J. Reese, Bowlegged BBQ is a welcoming community gathering place at Market and Toyne Streets. Rooted in family entrepreneurship, their food, music, and hospitality honor the traditions of soul food and the legacy of their ancestors.

1he doors will open at 5pm for a reception featuring Jazz Harpist Mariea Antoinette.

The program will begin at 6pm.

This event is free but space is limited.

The Keepers of the Culture event is made possible through generous donations including the Cathy Paulette Hamilton Memorial Fund.
