Biographical / Historical Notes

Mary Gilman Marston was born in San Diego, California in 1879 to George White Marston and Ann Lee Gunn. She attended San Diego High School, Pomona College, and Wellesley College, which she graduated in 1903. Mary was closely involved in her father’s civic activities, acting as his assistant and consultant in the creation of park lands and urban planning. After his death in 1946 she continued to support numerous cultural, civic, and social causes. She served on the Neighborhood House Board, and was a member of the San Diego Historical Society, San Diego Floral Association, San Diego Museum of Art, and San Diego Museum of Man. She was also a long time member of the Wednesday and Tuesday Clubs, and the Zlac Rowing Club. In 1956 she completed a two-volume biography of her father’s life, George White Marston: A Family Chronicle.

In 1974 she donated 4.5 acres of her estate to the City of San Diego, under the stipulation that she retain full rights to the family mansion during her lifetime. Upon her death, the mansion was to be the new headquarters of the San Diego Historical Society. She never married, and died in July 1987 at the age of 107.
