Biographical / Historical Notes

Charles Deleval was a businessman active in real estate, an express service, and a liquor business in San Diego in the late nineteenth century. By 1874, he was operating his express service out of a building at Fifth Avenue and F Street, which later became known as the Spencer-Ogden building.

Scope and Content

This collection contains a book of receipts for Charles Deleval, dated October 31, 1874 to September 3, 1878. The book is a Shipman’s Improved Adhesive Letter and Invoice File, in which records were pasted to short leaves. The receipts are primarily for groceries, building materials, oils, furnishings and bar supplies, and wholesale beers, wines, and liquors. Additionally, there are several receipts for settlements or expenses resulting from lawsuits, medical and dental bills, and liquor licenses.
