According to additional information provided on 9/2011 by a member of the E.H. Davis Project Scholar Advisory Committee: There is a tradition in May called the May Crowning that is practiced on several San Diego Reservations. It celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A young woman of good character is crowned the May Queen and she leads a procession to the church. This chapel looks to be decorated for something special; this may relate to that tradition.
