According to additional information provided by Teri Sloan Osuna on 10/2011:
Right of photo shows a dry river bed, left view shows juncus (dormant). Juncus grows near or in water. This area could be a water table, meaning that underneath the surface of the ground, water exists. These men could certainly be following this trail, as there would be water for them as well as for their horse or horses.
