According to additional information provided on 10/2011 by a member of the E.H. Davis Project Scholar Advisory Committee: The rope would probably be used to lower the casket into the grave. In the crowd the priest looks on ensuring that all ceremonial practices are compliant with Catholic religion. Traditional Kumeyaay ceremonies were not accepted by the clergy inside the Catholic blessed graveyard in this era.
