BIOGRAPHICAL OR HISTORICAL NOTE:
Constructed in 1940 on Torrey Pines Mesa north of San Diego, Camp Callan served as an Army training center during World War II.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE:
The Camp Callan Collection contains original photographs chiefly from newspaper coverage of the military facility during its first year of operation just before the outbreak of World War II. Some photographs have been marked or cropped for layout. Subjects include construction work, barracks and other buildings, vehicles, troop trains, recruits, dental and medical exams, camp commander Colonel Francis P. Hardaway and other officers, military police, buglers, mess hall, mail call, payday, leisure activities, classroom instruction, exercises, maneuvers, drills, artillery training, and a wedding ceremony.
