A section called “The Isthmus” (named for the site of the Panama Canal) was set up at the 1911 celebration in anticipation of “The Isthmus” which was to be the amusement zone or midway at the actual Exposition in 1915. This was located downtown in an area south of D Street between Front and State Streets and encompassing E and F Streets. Here were held shows featuring oriental dancers, bronco busters from the Wild West, Mexican rebels from the May-June military engagement at Tijuana, trapeze artists, and a trained moose, horse and orangutan.
