Casualties of 1956 It was a bad year for the memory of Alonzo E. Horton, founder of modern San Diego. Top left, his first (1869) cottage, later moved and made into a two-story house at Second and Beech Streets, was demolished to make room for a parking-lot; top right, his 1885 home at First and Fir has been replaced by an office building — and so the last of his homes is no more. Lower left, the sturdy brick residence in the 2400-block on G Street was one of the last to succumb to the freeway bulldozers; the date incised in its cistern curbing was 1887. Lower right, the old Sefton home at Sixth and Laurel, a landmark since the gas-light era, has been replaced by a bank.
