San Diego History Center Shining Bright!

In 2011, San Diego History Center set a goal to increase the amount of light in its public galleries while saving money. Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, San Diego History Center installed new lighting that brightens up the galleries and saves over $9,000 per year.

Information on the Plaza de Panama Project

The Plaza de Panama project will transform the core of Balboa Park into a grand public space for San Diego.  By removing cars from the heart of the park, the Plaza de Panama, Plaza de California, West El Prado and Esplanade will be restored to their historic use as pedestrian park spaces.

History Center to exhibit and restore renowned landscape art by San Diego Depression-era painters

San Diego, Calif.—San Diego History Center (SDHC) will showcase rare, Depression-era paintings by renowned San Diego landscape painters in a special exhibition in SDHC’s Local Treasures Gallery titled, LANDSCAPES REDISCOVERED: Depression-era San Diego Paintings. The exhibition opens September 7.

Thursday contest will test trivia knowledge

  • Which San Diegan swam the English Channel in 1951 and broke a 50-year-old record?
  • Where is the 514-acre underwater marine preserve, established in 1970?
  • Who built the first tourist hotel, opened in 1953, on Mission Bay?

 

If you don’t know, don’t bother entering the first San Diego History Trivia Smackdown, set for 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the San Diego History Center in the Casa de Balboa, just west of the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park.

History Center to show Depression-era art

SAN DIEGO

The San Diego History Center has entered into anagreement with the San Diego Unified School District that allows it to show a series of rare, Depression-era paintings that for decades hung in public schools and administration buildings.

The exhibit, “Landscapes Rediscovered: DepressioneraSan Diego Paintings,” opens Sept. 7 at the HistoryCenter in Balboa Park.
