The fantastical world created within the corridors of Theodor Geisel’s mind is inescapable to anyone that grew up with his books, penned under the iconic pseudonym Dr. Seuss. While as children we may have feared a visit to the doctor, imagining the world of pain that would be inflicted by a horrible, needle-wielding monster, Dr. Seuss served as a wonderfully wacky respite. Here’s a doctor whose sole purpose was to tickle our funny bone with his wit and colorful imagination. He was part of most children’s lives and his legacy continues to live on throughout the world.

The San Diego History Center presents a marquee exhibition celebrating Theodor Geisel. Spanning early drawings in Life magazine, including editorial, advertising, military, and book illustrations, as well as works from the Secret Art Collection, the exhibition will also feature family-friendly activities based on Dr. Seuss’ books’ underlying themes: literacy, the environment, family, and community. Dick and Jane were a pleasant pair of prototypical American children. They had a nice dog named Spot, too. Millions of kids read about their everyday activities, in primary school storybooks widely used to get youngsters to read. That is, until a clever cat with a flamboyant hat showed up at the door of Sally and her brother in 1957.

San Diego, California―The California Preservation Foundation (CPF) has selected the Historic Structure Report for the Junípero Serra Museum, operated by the San Diego History Center, for a prestigious 2014 Preservation Design Award in the Cultural Resource, Studies, or Reports category.
