Belle Baranceanu

The Artist at Work

September 16, 2006 – May 29, 2007

“The Artist at Work” highlighted the career of acclaimed artist Belle Baranceanu. She is particularly noted for a series of WPA murals, several of which continue to grace public spaces around San Diego, as well as bold oil paintings of landscapes and portraits. This exhibit was the first solo showing or her work in more than 20 years, providing a broad overview of Baranceanu’s career and an inside look at the artist’s creative process, tracing the steps involved in designing the oversized pieces. Highlighting the exhibition was the first public viewing of the complete murals (on canvas) designed for Roosevelt Junior High School, rescued by the San Diego History Center in 1983. The exhibition also presented prominent pieces from private collections and other works previously exhibited.
