Henry Delano Fitch pursued an active career in shipping and various mercantile affairs. From his home port of San Diego he traded with vessels from New England, South America, Mexico and the Hawaiian Islands.
Abel Stearns, a resident of the Los Angeles area, was involved in a number of business dealings with Captain Fitch.
