Father Junípero Serra, the Traveling Missionary.

By Linda Lyngheim. Illustrations by Phyllis Garber. Van Nuys: Langtry Publications, 1986. Maps. Illustrations. Bibliography. 64 Pages. $12.95

This is apparently the first children’s book on Junipero Serra. It is by librarian, Linda Lyngheim, who previously published another book for juveniles, The Indians and the California Missions (1984). Serra seems to be a sound account of Serra’s life presented in a simple fashion for children. The author appears to follow the basic outline of Serra’s life and career as established in Maynard Geiger’s Life and Times of Fray Junipero Serra (2 vols., 1959) as later summarized by Don De Nevi and Francis Maholy (whose name the author lists incorrectly in the bibliography). Although the book includes maps and illustrations, it is mostly printed text.
