This is a list of movie titles that have been filmed in San Diego or have plots concerning San Diego. While it may be exhaustive, it is not complete. Included are movies, television series, made-for-television movies, pilots of television shows, documentaries, and some concerts filmed in San Diego. Not included are the many locally produced corporate or educational documentaries produced in San Diego by companies such as SDG&E (now held by the San Diego Historical Society).

While most of the movies listed are fictional feature films, there are some documentary titles meant for a wide audience. There can certainly be debate about what constitutes a “San Diego film.” If one scene was filmed in San Diego is it really a San Diego film? If a movie was filmed on a local ship with the crew based in San Diego, is it a San Diego film? If a location crew came down to San Diego to film shots of the city for a movie, is it a San Diego film? For the purposes of this list the answer to those questions is yes. The purpose of this list is to note the presence of filmmakers in San Diego. Less than thirty of these movies were not filmed in San Diego, but have enough of a San Diego storyline to deserve notice. Each entry has a title, production company, date and San Diego County location. Locations are listed if there is information available. If “San Diego” is listed a source has indicated that it was filmed in town, but no more specific information was available. If a movie has several San Diego locations not all local and none of out-of-the-county locations have been listed because of space limitations.

Source material comes from the Internet Movie database (imdb.com), the San Diego Union Tribune files, the San Diego History Center photograph collection and research archives, the archives of the San Diego Film Commission, a variety of books including Lawrence Suid’s Sailing on the Silver Screen and Coronado: The Enchanted Island by Brandes and Carlin, the index of the American Film Institute, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Margaret Herrick Library, the Oceanside Historical Society, the Coronado Historical Association and the La Mesa Historical Society. Major source materials were provided from the USD thesis “Can You Read My Lips? A Guide to the Silent Film Industry in San Diego, 1898-1930” by Susan Carrico et al. and “Pioneer Film Making in the West” by Blaine Peterson Lamb and “Siegmund Lubin: moving picture pioneer, 1851-1923” by John Arthur Helley. Some titles are listed because the Historical Society owns a photograph of a film being shot in San Diego.

Sources not entirely checked and remaining to be checked are the un-indexed portions of the San Diego Union-Tribune, a variety of local county newspapers throughout San Diego County, a many early of film periodicals, and the records of the film studios. As motion picture history is often forgotten until someone tries to recall it or research it, there is plenty of opportunity for tall tales and downright wrong information. This has been taken into account.
