Images of Mexico in the United States (Vol. 1 of Dimensions of the United States-Mexican Relations Series).
Edited by John Coatsworth and Carlos Rico. San Diego: Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies, UCSD, 1989. 133 pages.
A series of essays exploring various aspects of the ways in which Mexico is interpreted in the U.S. Originally a workshop session at UCSD, the contributions include an analysis of how Americans have viewed U.S.-Mexican relations, finding that we are abysmally ignorant of the most crucial aspects of our relationship: trade, debt and immigration. Two essays interpret the media, newsprint, television and movies and how they have viewed Mexico and Mexicans. The final essay analyzes how U.S. school text books have treated Mexico. These are serious academic studies that hopefully will shed some light on vexing contemporary problems.
